The Wastewater Epidemiology and Metagenomics Lab (WEML-IBT, UNAM) leads a pilot study to monitor viruses and bacteria in treatment plants. By analyzing wastewater through genomic and metagenomic approaches, this strategy enables early pathogen detection—even in asymptomatic cases—and expands epidemiological surveillance under a One Health framework, including respiratory and gastrointestinal viruses as well as antimicrobial resistance genes.
